City & Town Orange County encompasses 34 cities but lacks a distinctive downtown. Disneyland makes Anaheim the most famous, but other cities offer interesting experiences. History buffs enjoy San Juan Capistrano's mission, Yorba Linda's Nixon Presidential Library and restored Victorian homes in Santa Ana and Orange. Shoppers head to glam malls in Costa Mesa, while Huntington Beach has the most vibrant downtown. The Great Outdoors Family Fun Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm make Orange County an ideal family vacation destination, and there are far more places to explore. Kids and parents get a thrill out of Sky Zone Anaheim's indoor trampolines and more than 100 hands-on exhibits and 4D theater at Santa Ana's Discovery Science Center, while the sharks at Long Beach's aquarium offer plenty of thrills. CA RUINS OF the Great Stone Church at Mission San Juan Capistrano, destroyed by an earthquake in 1812. The sprawling Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, which covered more than 4,000 acres in Orange County, was decommissioned in 1999. The valuable land could have numerous uses, including as an international airport. A 1,300 acre parcel is gradually evolving as the ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK, a metropolitan park incorporating agricultural areas, artist studios in the Palm Court Arts Complex and several recreational areas. The most visible attraction is the Great Park Balloon, a bright orange hot air balloon that carries 25 passengers 400 feet into the air. Rides are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The balloon operates during limited hours Thursday through Sunday. Check ocgp.org/ visit/ride-great-park-balloon for current details. The carefree way to get around The Anaheim Resort ™ SPECTRUMINFO Orange County is packed with natural wonders. Its 42 miles of prime SoCal coastline contain famed surf spots (Huntington Beach, the Wedge at Newport Beach), yacht harbors (Newport Beach, Dana Point), Crystal Cove State Park's protected underwater reserve and wilderness, and several wetlands reserves filled with birds. Inland, wild canyons and parks are filled with endless hiking and biking trails. In active OC, exercise options are always close at hand.
