Nearly every town and city in California, regardless of size, seems to have a stage of its own—from the northern Eureka Theater to the Coronado Playhouse in San Diego. Not only that, the state's scores of concert halls, orchestras, comedy clubs, ballet troupes, operas, theater festivals, jazz spots and even circuses are a constant challenge to the notion of spending a quiet night (or even afternoon) at home. What else would one expect, really, from the birthplace of Hollywood and the home of the San Francisco Ballet? The performing arts are among California's stellar strengths, and the variety of possibilities—sacred, comic, and everything in between—can be both exhilarating and maddening. A full accounting is impossible in so few pages, but here are some options to keep in mind if you are visiting the major metropolitan areas, north or south. Regional Theaters Half a dozen California regional playhouses have won Tony Awards, the highest distinction in American theater. The Berkeley Repertory Theatre, about 30 minutes by car or public transportation from San Francisco, continues a tradition of inspired experimentation, with works by playwrights such as Mary Zimmerman and solo shows by Anna Devere Smith, Mike Daisy, Carrie Fisher and many others.
