Nearby North Beach is famous for the legendary City Lights bookstore, antique and specialty food shops. Pacific Heights has fancy consignment shops and fine luxury goods retailers and a three-building complex in Japantown is known for authentic Japanese goods such as tansu chests, bonsai and antique kimonos. Finally, be sure to visit two more neighborhoods ripe for discovery, the Haight, for incense, used records and vintage clothing, and Hayes Valley, a hipster haven with trendy stores and nary a chain store in sight. A two-hour drive south of San Francisco, the artistic village of Carmelby-the-Sea north of Big Sur's rugged coast is a great source for natureinspired art found in small art galleries and tasteful antique shops. If heading north to Napa Valley and its environs, discover Tuscany-worthy gourmet finds, quality wine purveyors, artisanal food shops, olive oil producers and cheese makers on Sonoma's town square. Pick up fine wines at Napa Valley wineries and explore the boutiques and European-style cafés lining Saint Helena's historic main street. And don't miss the seasonal abundance of Napa and Sonoma farmers markets. West of Napa, downtown Petaluma's historic district is lined with antique shops in restored Victorian buildings. If looking for brand names and mall-time, the region also has three outlet malls, in Petaluma, Napa and Vacaville. North Coast Galleries & Crafts Finally, on California's wild North Coast, don't miss the superbly handcrafted furniture and handicrafts found in the romantic ocean view lanes of artsy Mendocino. Absorb the natural landscape and browse in jewelry, perfume and other specialty shops or find an eclectic treasure in an antique store. As it turns out, any shopaholic or fashionista worth her salt will discover that the Golden State's shopping possibilities are as vast as the state itself.
