MAMMOTH LAKES A Mammoth for all seasons by bill fink A SERENE FALL day in Mammoth Lakes, above; winter mushing, below. Summer Fun ยป HIKE, FISH, SKI, GOLF! Mammoth Lakes Visitor Information visitmammoth.com Mammoth Mountain Skiing & more mammothmountain.com The area is well known for fishing, so much so that some local motels feature fish-cleaning facilities. Fly fishing in streams and lure-based fishing from boats in lakes gives everyone a chance to try their specialty or pick up a new skill. A variety of trout await your arrival at Convict Lake and other lakes in Mammoth Lakes Basin. Hikers and bikers can hit mountain trails and explore the odd Devils Postpile National Monument and its towering basalt columns. Summer is also festival time, the calendar filled with music events and food and drink gatherings, including the combination of "blues and brews" for 2013's 18th annual Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza. Winter Sports As the name suggests, Mammoth Moun- 158 2 013 travel guide to c al ifo r n i a tain ski resort is gigantic, with expansive terrain suitable for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, nine terrain parks and regular competitions for those who just want to watch. For non-skiers, Mammoth Lakes also connects visitors with dogsled rides, snowmobiling, snowshoe tours and even snowcat rides to scenic picnic spots. Spring Activity Often considered just a "shoulder season" between skiing and fishing, spring around Mammoth Lakes offers great deals on lodging and activities for those looking for some late-season sunny skiing (Mammoth Mountain routinely stays open past Memorial Day), or some early golfing and fishing. Some people try for the "spring triathlon" of skiing, biking and golfing in a single day. Fall Colors Fall foliage is a treat for the eyes around Mammoth Lakes. Enjoy hiking in the crisp fall air, or go for a drive up mountain canyons to see the spectacular colors in groves of aspens and cottonwood trees. Fall also features Mammoth Mountain's Bluegrass music festival in September. CA MAMMOTH LAKES TOURISM TWO HOURS NORTH of Mt. Whitney, the Continental United States' highest point, and only 45 minutes from Yosemite's east entrance, the Mammoth Lakes region is an epicenter for outdoor activities no matter what the season.
