SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ยป BIKE, PLAY, EAT, SOAK! South Lake Tahoe Visitor Information tahoesouth.com 160 2013 travel guid e to c al i fo r n ia IT'S HARD TO BEAT South Lake Tahoe if you're looking for the ideal place to hang out with your pals, entertain the family or cozy up with your sweetheart. When one half longs to be pampered in a spa and the other yearns to bomb down a single-track mountain-biking trail, the renowned alpine resort is the perfect solution. When one dreams of hiking a bracing timberline ridge and the other thinks more along the lines of highthread-count sheets, sunset cocktails and world-class dining, Tahoe can make everyone happy. Thirty-nine trillion gallons of crystal clear water cradled in a basin of majestic granite peaks, Lake Tahoe is the secondlargest alpine lake in the world, after Lake Titicaca in South America. Its South Shore, which straddles the CaliforniaNevada border, is the nexus of action, with the greatest concentration of lodging, shopping, dining and gambling. There you can walk out of a glittering hotel casino and step right onto a gondola that will whisk you 2.4 miles up the mountain to Heavenly, a year-round by peter watts resort crisscrossed by summer hiking and mountain-biking trails. From the top gondola station, at 9,123 feet, you get a shoreline-to-shoreline panorama of Lake Tahoe and tantalizing views of the Carson Valley, Crystal Range and Desolation Wilderness. Or break out your clubs and swing away at Edgewood Tahoe, the only golf course on the lake and home of Tahoe Celebrity Golf. In the evening, trade in your hiking boots and Gore-Tex parka for a silk shirt and Manolo Blahnik pumps, and spend the evening trying your luck at a blackjack or craps table. Or take in a show, ranging from the headliner rock shows at Harveys to bluegrass festivals and comedy clubs. With close to 25,000 beds, South Lake Tahoe has accommodations for every price range and taste, from budget motels under $50 a night to penthouse suites with maid and butler service. Or, for al fresco lodging, you can pitch your tent among the butterscotch-scented ponderosa pines at the many state park campgrounds lining the lake.
