The Irvine Spectrum Center, with architecture inspired by Spain's Alhambra, is bookended by Nordstrom and Macy's; choose from 130 stores, restaurants and entertainment venues, including a comedy club and a 21-screen cinema with an IMAX. Ground zero for local styleophiles, Fashion Island's casual resort setting overlooks the Pacific. Leading with Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, this coastal center, embellished with splashing fountains and a peaceful koi pond, has more than 100 shops and 36 restaurants. Beyond the malls, explore stylish, creative Laguna Beach's fine art and craft galleries lining the streets sloping to a pretty beach. If you're making the trek to Palm Springs, stop at the 130-store Desert Hills Premium Outlets in Cabazon for brands such as Coach and Dolce & Gabbana. Farther south, San Diego's own Rodeo Drive—Prospect Street in La Jolla— has art galleries, fashion boutiques and sweeping Pacific views. On San Diego Bay, Seaport Village's waterfront location distracts shoppers with splendid views. In a restored Victorian section of the city center, the 16 ½-block Gaslamp Quarter includes the usual mall denizens as well as hip boutiques, art galleries and fine gift shops. Or voyage on the Coronado Ferry across the bay to the Ferry Landing Marketplace for more shopping options. The region also boasts two outlet malls, one on Carlsbad's coast and the other south of San Diego at the U.S.-Mexico border. Northern California Elegance Shopaholics love San Francisco's massive malls and quirky boutiques where the city's European flair is on display in the Prada-clad parade circling Union Square or strolling down chic Maiden Lane. Two blocks away, shop inside an architectural gem at the Westfield San Francisco Centre on seven exquisitely appointed floors. Inside this mammoth mall, you'll find 200 specialty shops, designer boutiques and restaurants, including two foodie emporiums, in gorgeous atriums under a stunning 1908 dome. There's also great shopping in San Francisco neighborhoods. Chinatown MIICHAEL ONTIVEROS; MIRCO WILHELM; THE AVENUES THIRD STREET PROMENADE in downtown Santa Monica, above, offers a mix of national brands and boutiques, movie theaters, restaurants and a wide spectrum of street performers.
