The blossoming each year of thousands of plum trees was a sight that old-timers never forget. But rows of fruit trees were long ago replaced by acres of housing and office complexes as one of the world's biggest industries—high technology—took hold. Agricultural areas were transformed into what was soon dubbed Silicon Valley, home to tech powerhouses Apple, Facebook, Hewlett-Packard and Intel, among others.
