The Gamble House in Pasadena and the Thorsen House in Berkeley designed by Charles and Henry Greene are prime examples. Bernard Maybeck was another leading architect of the movement. He designed more than a hundred houses, many of which are in the city of Berkeley and can be seen on public walking tours organized by the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association. Golden Gate Bridge & Postmodern Movement The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate—the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Painted in international orange to complement the surrounding scenery, the bridge glows at dawn and dusk. Its towers recede into the sky; its center span floats in the air. Its beauty comes from Art Deco design elements of simple geometric shapes, clean lines, recurring motifs such as the chevron, and of course its natural setting. To experience this iconic bridge you can walk, drive or bicycle across. Often in the forefront of international trends, California embraced the postmodern architecture movement, with excellent examples in the stainless steel Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the copper-draped de Young Museum in San Francisco. Gardens North & South In gardens as in architecture, the California spirit of freedom and individuality prevails. Within the state you will find an astonishing collection of gardens with styles ranging from classical to modern, formal to casual, all integrated with local geography, climate and lifestyle. Two well-known botanical gardens are the Los Angeles County Arboretum and the San Francisco Botanical Garden. But it is the lesser-known Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden that best captures the essence of the Pacific Ocean.
